Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI) and various physical fitness factors in older adults (OA) from Guasave, Sinaloa, highlighting its significance for functionality and quality of life in this population. As the population ages, maintaining muscle mass becomes crucial to preserving mobility and autonomy, as its loss is associated with muscle weakness, frailty, and reduced independence. The sample consisted of 36 OA (20 men, 16 women) with an average age of 71.06 years. SMMI was assessed using bioimpedance, and tools such as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the FRAIL scale for frailty, and the Senior Fitness Test were employed to assess physical condition. Additionally, handgrip strength was measured with a JAMAR dynamometer. The results showed a significant positive correlation between SMMI and handgrip strength, as well as with lower limb strength, assessed using the sit-to-stand test. However, no significant correlations were found between SMMI and aerobic capacity or flexibility. These findings emphasize the importance of SMMI as an indicator of muscular strength in OA, suggesting that maintaining or increasing muscle mass is crucial for preventing frailty and improving physical functionality. This study provides valuable evidence for the development of exercise programs tailored to this population.
