Abstract

The cempoalxóchitl (Tagetes erecta) is a plant endemic to Mexico with a great potential and multiple applications, including ornamental, therapeutic, agro-industrial and technological applications. Since its first reports in the 15th century, cempoalxóchitl has been naturalized in different subtropical areas of the world. Carotenoids are among the most important metabolites present in T. erecta. These are lipophilic and hydrophobic compounds, generally composed of a hydrocarbon skeleton of 40 atoms, among its roles it has been described in development and stress responses. The development of omics approaches to generate strategies to increase the yield and/or production levels of these metabolites in T. erecta could be a solution to meet the demand and position Mexico as a leader in the production of carotenoids. This will also allow the development of more sustainable technologies through the use of T. erecta
