Predictors of Stress, Recovery, and Pain Associated with Running in Amateur Runners

Running has established itself as a highly popular physical activity, characterized by its accessibility and significant contribution to physical and psychological well-being. However, research has pointed out that inappropriate practice can have negative consequences, affecting both performance and enjoyment. This study analyzed how sleep quality, total recovery quality, and mindfulness disposition influence the perception of stress and recovery in long-distance runners, as well as the presence of running-related pain. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 84 participants (34.5% women, 65.5% men; 34.55 ±12.52 years old; 170.08 ±9.15 cm in height; 72.84 ±12.80 kg in weight). Variables such as the Acute Recovery and Stress Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Total Quality Recovery (TQR), mindfulness disposition, and the perception of running-related pain were evaluated. Data were analyzed using logistic regression to determine predictive relationships. Results revealed that TQR and mindfulness positively predicted the perception of physical, mental, and total recovery, while poor sleep was associated with higher levels of emotional and general stress. Mindfulness also demonstrated positive effects on regulating muscular stress, highlighting its potential to promote optimal states of relaxation and body awareness. Additionally, the perception of muscular stress predicted running-related pain. However, variables such as sleep quality did not significantly predict running-related pain. In conclusion, recovery quality, sleep, and mindfulness are key factors in runners' preparation, emphasizing the need for strategies to optimize these aspects to enhance their performance and psychological well-being
