Abstract

Lichenized fungi are a part of lichen symbiotic associations, in which a fungus and a microalgae or cyanobacteria form a mutually beneficial relationship. This relationship allows lichenized fungi to thrive in a wide range of environments, including extreme conditions such as deserts and high altitudes. Due to their sensibility to atmospheric pollutants and their ability to absorb and retain metallic elements, they have been used as bioindicators of the ecosistem health. Despite their ecological significance, little is known about the species diversity of lichenized fungi in certain regions of México, such as the state of Sinaloa. In this study, a directed sampling was performed in “El Maviri” beach, located in the municipality of Ahome, Sinaloa, in which five lichen morphotypes were obtained. For their identification, their DNA was extracted through the CTAB method, the ITS region was amplified and a phylogenetic analysis was performed using the Maximum Likelihood method. In the analysis, three samples were identified as Ramalina sp., where two of them formed a sister clade with R. complanata and one with R. stenospora. On the other hand, one sample was identified as Dirinaria consimilis, while the last sample was identified as Lecanora sp., which formed a sister clade with L. argopholis. These findings emphasize the importance of “El Maviri” beach as a habitat for lichen diversity. Further studies should be conducted to explore the potential ecological roles of these lichen species and to assess their potential for medicinal or other practical uses.
